Paris La Défense has undertaken a major review to improve links between the business district and the cities of Courbevoie and Puteaux. One of the priority projects consists of renovating and enhancing several emblematic footbridges in the area. This project has a twofold objective, that of both restoring structures damaged by the passage of time and restoring the overall coherence and identity of the footbridges of Paris La Défense.
The world-renowned architecture firm DIETMAR FEICHTINGER ARCHITECTES was commissioned by Paris La Défense to rehabilitate these structures, because beyond the technical renovation, it is also a question of enhancing the aesthetic value of the works. Thus the footbridges will benefit from new coverings, luminous slabs and night lighting in order to improve the comfort of use for users (and in particular for people with reduced mobility).
Objectives and challenges of the footbridge enhancement project
Restoring legibility, urban function and identity to aging works
More than a technical renovation and a restoration of the structures, the enhancement of the footbridges aims to give back an urban function to these structures through their lighting, the creation of relaxation spaces, the taking into account of a comfort of use (PMR accessibility for example) or the proposal of an itinerary of discovery of the district. This legibility and identity is reflected in the creation of a common thread, a common language between all the footbridges. The architect's proposal to materialise this common thread by means of luminous slabs or plays of light, and the harmonisation of the coverings and railings, gives the ensemble an identity that does not exist today.
Connecting the districts and creating entrance doors to the historic heart of Paris La Défense
These pedestrian connections are as many physical and symbolic links aiming to connect territories to each other and cities to the slab, with the major challenge of transforming these footbridges into more engaging public spaces. If the function of these footbridges is primarily to allow the crossing of transport routes, they nevertheless have a vocation of welcoming the site.
Enhancing the urban and architectural heritage of Paris La Défense
Unique and atypical for its vertical architecture and history, Paris La Défense also conceals grandiose panoramas, spectacular buildings but also more little-known landscape views. To highlight this singularity, the architectural proposal chosen integrates glass desks and screens in the railings of each footbridge. Like the structures, these elements will be backlit at night.
