In August, visit Espace Info Paris La Défense to discover the history of the work of art that gives its name to the business district!

Through a series of photos, you can follow its journey from August 12, 1883, when it replaced the statue of Napoleon 1st, to the present day! Originally located on the La Défense traffic circle, this work of art has a short but intense history.

La Défense de Paris won a competition organized by the City of Paris to honor the soldiers and civilians who defended the capital during the 1870 war. Among several well-known names, including Gustave Doré and Auguste Rodin, it was Louis-Ernest Barrias, working alongside the foundryman Henri Léon Thiébault, who was chosen to create the bronze sculpture.

In 1953, the statue of La Défense de Paris was to be replaced by a statue of Gambetta. But thanks to its unfailing popularity, it kept its place. Well, almost... To find out the rest of the story, you know what to do!
