Born in 1952 in Locarno, Switzerland. Lives and works in Paris, France.
Since the 1980's, Felice Varini has been developing a work of painting that unfolds in the architectural space of urban landscapes. His formal vocabulary is simple and geometric: squares, triangles, ellipses, circles, rectangles or straight lines crossing the landscape or architecture.
The work for La Seine Musicale
"Architectural space, and everything that constitutes it, is my field of action. These spaces are and remain the primary supports of my painting. I intervene in situ in a different place each time and my work evolves in relation to the spaces I am led to encounter. In general, I walk through the place, taking note of its architecture, its materials, its history and its function. From its different spatial data and with reference to the last piece I made, I define a point of view around which my intervention takes shape.
I call a point of view a point in space that I choose with precision: it is generally located at eye level and preferably located on a passageway, for example an opening between one room and another, a landing, etc. I use the term point of view to refer to a point in space that I choose with precision. However, I don't make this a rule because not all spaces have an obvious path. The choice is often arbitrary.
The point of view will function as a reading point, that is to say as a possible starting point when approaching the painting and the space. The painted form is coherent when the spectator is in that place. When the viewer leaves the point of view, the work encounters the space which generates an infinite number of points of view on the form. It is therefore not through this first point that I see the work done; it stands in the whole of the points of view that the viewer can have on it.
Although I establish a particular relationship with architectural features that influence the form of the installation, my work nevertheless retains its independence whatever the architectures I encounter. I start from a real situation to build my painting. This reality is never altered, erased or modified, it interests me and attracts me in all its complexity. My practice is to work "here and now" ".
