Colonne Oiseau [Bird Column] - Claude Torricini

The artwork

The Bird Column is carved out of a solid block of mahogany and is 4.50 metres high. This sculpture was conceived as a landmark and as an axis around which the movements of the public in the clearing of the Quatre Temps shopping centre are organised.

Initially installed on the Grand Place, the artwork was moved during the renovation of the shopping centre in 2008. It is now installed in the Carrière du centre.

The artist

Born in Fort de France in 1930, Claude Torricini now lives in Paris where she continues her sculpted, stylised, refined and poetic bestiary whose creatures add a delightfully naive and mischievous note to the urban environments and gardens in which they quite naturally find their place.
